In memoriam
Bernd Rettig (7. 1963 – 10. 2024)
Quando Bernd e Magrit, a sua mulher, vieram pela primeira vez a Santa Maria em 2000, foi amor à primeira vista. Eles vieram à ilha para mergulhar. Mas não foi apenas a natureza subaquática que os encantou. As pessoas e a autenticidade da ilha também os cativaram.
Em 2004, compraram uma pequena casa mariense, que renovaram com muito carinho, com as próprias mãos e a ajuda de amigos locais, tornando-a habitável. Desde então, passaram a vir todos os anos a Santa Maria. Meses antes, já estavam ansiosos por voltar ao que se tornou o seu segundo lar.
Mergulho, caminhadas, snorkeling – havia sempre algo para descobrir. Mas eles também cultivavam a amizade com os vizinhos e o círculo de amigos cresceu cada vez mais. Os anos em Santa Maria foram cheios de aventuras, e Bernd adorava-as – independentemente da estação do ano.
Bernd e Magrit tinham encontrado o seu paraíso. Mas a morte chegou muito cedo e arrancou Bernd à vida no caminho de regresso para a Alemanha.
O donativo em benefício do Clube Naval é uma expressão da ligação de Bernd e Magrit com a ilha de Santa Maria e do seu amor pelo mar. Mas é também um sinal de gratidão por tudo o que a ilha e os seus habitantes ofereceram ao casal ao longo de todos esses anos.

When Bernd and his wife Magrit first came to Santa Maria in 2000, it was love at first sight. They came to the island to dive. But it wasn’t just the underwater world that captivated them. They were also enchanted by the people and the island’s unspoilt nature.
In 2004, they purchased a small Santa Maria house, which they lovingly renovated and made habitable with their own hands and the help of local friends. From then on, they came to Santa Maria every year, looking forward months in advance to what had become their second home.
Diving, hiking, snorkelling – there was always something to discover. But they also cultivated their neighbourhood and their ever-growing circle of friends. The years on Santa Maria were full of adventure, and Bernd loved them – no matter what the season.
Bernd and Magrit had found their paradise. But death came far too soon and took Bernd’s life on his way back to Germany.
The donation to the Clube Naval is an expression of Bernd and Magrit’s attachment to the island of Santa Maria and their love of the sea. But it is also a sign of gratitude for everything the island and its inhabitants have given the couple over the years.
